Two Grafton TAFE bands in top three for the state
Thursday 30th August 2007
Last Friday night, the four bands from the nciMusic course achieved great success against other bands from around the State in the finals of the TAFE NSW Student Association Band Competition in Sydney.
The band “Mikel Johnson and the Bearded Calm” (Mikel Johnson, Orson Gawne, Nick Bird), achieved second place, and “The Pretty Sweet” (Kate Wyman, Will Edgar, Ally Ray, Mikel Johnson) gained third place.
Grafton Student Association Officer, Angela Boorman attended the finals and said that people who attended were extremely impressed with the outstanding musicianship and talent that all bands brought to the competition.
“All the bands put on an amazing performance,” said Ms Boorman, “but I was especially proud of all of the Grafton students who competed… their talent and sportsmanship really made them stand out from the rest of the competitors.”
Campus Manager, Wendy Bruszewski offered her congratulations to all of the Grafton competitors and noted that Mikel Johnson is another of Grafton Campus’ achievers, winning a Gold Award of Excellence for his studies in 2005, as well as winning the North Coast Dolphin Award in 2005 for Best Vocals.
The 10 students who took part in the competition are currently enrolled in either the Certificate IV or Advanced Diploma in Music Performance.
